A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in public works. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an prompt halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
