Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments came to light.

This encompassed attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could enable a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said information from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's determination was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that he be authorized to leave his home for healthcare, saying he needed ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The police intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the period, the legal team called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
