Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
