During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” the metropolis, ushering in “a new era” and an ambitious start to his term.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The new political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind comes rarely and rarer still is it that the public whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Free buses
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Challenges

The new mayor must contend with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
